Immel Grain Farms

It was Kevin Immel’s childhood dream to be a farmer. He loved to watch the crops grow. Now he lives his dream every day, while working the land, planting the seeds, and watching the crops grow on the many acres farmed by Immel Grain Farms in Fond du lac, Wisconsin. It’s a job he has been doing since he was old enough to start helping out on his family’s farm and he still looks forward to it every day of the week!

Kevin and his four boys work together to keep the operation moving and improving. They have been doing cover crops for 10 – 12 years now. The Immels also discovered the wind potential of their land and they are generating energy from the installation of wind turbines.

Kevin’s list of favorite parts of his job included combining during the harvest season and yelling at the kids. All joking aside, he appreciates working with his family. “It’s awesome,” he said. “I enjoy it every day.” The Immel boys; Tyler, Trevor, Travis, and Trenton will be the 5th generation of the family to farm if they decide to stay with the operation. “Right now, the kids are doing various off-farm jobs, too,” Kevin said. “I want them to find out what it is like off the farm to appreciate the farm more.” When Kevin was young, he went out on a similar path and worked in a factory during the 80’s. He came back to the farm and realized that after testing out those other opportunities, picking stones didn’t seem as bad as he had once thought.

There is one thing that can get the whole family to take a break from their grain operation – Deer Hunting! “We shut everything down to go hunting,” Kevin said. They are also fans of baseball.

Thank you to Kevin for taking time to share some details about his farm and family for our Farmer Friday story this week. We wish you the best so those visions of bountiful crops are not only in your dreams, but in your fields this season and into the future!
