Winkel Highland Dairy

“In one word? Incredible! Working with our family throughout our whole lives has been an incredible experience,” according to Matt Winkel. Matt is the 4th generation of the Winkel family to find his passion in agriculture. He grew up farming and really enjoyed what they were doing. He is now part of the ownership of Winkel’s Highland Dairy Farm LLC along with his dad, Mark and his uncle, Dean. “We get along really good,” Matt said. “It's not much different than being married.” The partners can learn from each other and work through any differences.

The farm is located in Elkhart Lake, WI in Sheboygan County. They grow all of their own crops, raise all of their own animals and can do most of their own repairs by utilizing their talent and experiences. They enjoy raising cattle and taking care of the land to produce a product that people can eat. Each of the owners has their area of specialty for the operation and can appreciate the benefit of ‘being your own boss’. Dean enjoys working with the cows. Mark does the feeding and some of the field work. Matt does field work and has the responsibility of maintaining their equipment to keep everything and everyone working. The Winkels helped promote the dairy industry by welcoming visitors to see and experience their dairy farm as hosts of the Sheboygan County Breakfast on the Farm in 2010.
There are a few things outside of farming that Matt enjoys getting involved in. He offers his time and talent to help in his community as a member of the St. Anna Fire Department. He goes riding around on his motorcycle and made the trip to Sturgis last year. Matt and Dean also like to go camping.

Thank you to Matt and the Winkel family for taking part in our Farmer Friday story this week. The bond your family has with each other is demonstrated throughout your operation. We hope you continue to share your message and encourage the next generation to get involved in the agriculture industry. Best wishes for success!
