Kevin and Joyce Gierach

Kevin Gierach graduated in 1975 with aspirations of being a farmer. “I didn’t want to do anything else,” he said. “Farming was good back then. Prices were good and it was an attractive career choice.”

Kevin farms in Brownsville, Wisconsin with his wife, Joyce. They raise a few beef cows, but the mainstay of the operation is now grain. Kevin enjoys planting the crops which they have transitioned to doing all no-till. He had started with dairy and then in addition to selling milk he also worked at Grande Cheese. That arrangement allowed him time with his kids and their activities. “I learned a lot from working at Grande and made a lot of friends,” Kevin stated, “but my passion was still in farming.”

The Gierach’s son, Dustin, has become a part of the current operation with his wife, Vanessa, and their son, Nathaniel. Keeping the kids and the next-generation involved in the farm inspires Kevin for the future of agriculture. “I have 4 kids, 2 grandkids currently and we’re about to have 3,” he said. “I love that farming gives me the opportunity to be able to hang out with my kids and my grandkids.”

Outside of Agriculture you may see Dustin and Kevin out standing in another type of field. They have been playing softball together for about 17 years. They play on St. Luke’s Church League. Dustin was 13 when they started playing together. Kevin also coached soccer for about 10 years. The Gierachs are active members of St. Luke’s Church and Joyce plays the organ there part-time. The traveling bug has bit Kevin and Joyce and they both enjoy the adventures. Their most notable trips included parts of Europe and China.

Thank you to Kevin for sharing a few insights about himself and the Gierach’s family farming operation as this week’s Farmer Friday! There appears to be a strong thread keeping him connected to farming and to his family. We appreciate his dedication and ability to pull through any challenges. Best wishes to Kevin and the Gierach family for continued success!
