Doug Miller: Sher-Home Farms

Finding it... That place... That place where you carry on the traditions of your family… With your family. For Doug Miller, he said his family has been in this area for so long, it is like ‘their own little part of the world.’ Doug and his brother, Dennis, are the 7th generation to be operating their farm that started back in 1849. Doug’s son, Chris, will make it eight generations when he becomes a part of the family’s dairy & cash crop operation, Sher-Home Farms, in Random Lake, Wisconsin.

Doug went to school for accounting, but when he got done, he decided there was more for him at the farm. “I enjoy being on the land and the value I get from actually producing something that is useful,” Doug said. “We are producing something that you can actually see the necessity for in the world.” Sher-Home farms is truly a family run business, being completely family operated. He wanted to be a part of the family business and carry on the tradition. “It is a good way to raise a family,” according to Doug. “Giving them values from how you grew up and how you would like things to be in the future.”

Like many other farmers, harvesting the crops from their fields, this time of the year is the most satisfying for Doug. “The fall harvest season is when you get to see the results of what you did the whole year and hopefully it pays off,” he said. Doug does leave his ‘little part of the world’ on some days. He enjoys bowling, sports, and going to Marquette basketball games (having season tickets for the last 15 years or so). He is also a part of the Planning Commission for the Town of Sherman and held a seat on the Board for the former Kettle Lakes Cooperative.

Doug Miller’s story reminds us to cherish the traditions and values of our past, but also look what we can do for the future generations. Thank you to Doug and his family for working with Country Visions to achieve success in their family business. We appreciate your time to be our Farmer Friday and wish you the best in your operation.
