East Branch Dairy Farm

Mar 02, 2018

As the owners of Schmitz East Branch Dairy in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Dave and Mary Schmitz try to take a proactive approach when it comes to educating consumers about the agriculture industry. Being located close to town has many conveniences, but it can also bring some challenges, so keeping that conversation going is important. “We try to be open to the public,” Dave said. “We try to explain to them what we are doing and why.” He knew at a young age that he wanted to be a farmer and felt strongly about it. Dave has always felt it was an important thing to provide food for the world. He felt the ag industry makes a great contribution to our society. That passion for this industry has not wavered and makes it easy for him to talk about it. One of his favorite things is producing a successful crop and seeing the cattle do well from consuming it.

Dairy is the main focus of this farming operation, but they do some cash crops, too. Dave handles most of the daily operations since Mary has a full-time job off the farm, but she helps with the bookwork and fills in when needed for calf feeding. The Schmitz have two sons, Tony and Aaron, who are currently in college. Dave said he enjoys spending time with the family and watching the boys grow up and take on more responsibilities. Will there be a 5th generation getting involved in the family operation? Tony has expressed some interest, so Dave is hopeful.

Dave stays connected and involved with his community. He is a Supervisor on the Town of Fond du Lac Board, Member of Fond du Lac Area Ag Ambassador Committee, Agri-Business Council, Farm Bureau, and a former member of the Milk Marketing Board. A little bowling and spending time with friends are also fit in when there is a break in his busy schedule.

The best people to tell the story of where our food comes from are those that are producing it. Congratulations to Dave and his family for being open to having that conversation with consumers. Thank you for being a part of our Farmer Friday story. We wish you luck and success at Schmitz East Branch Dairy!
