Reedsville Cooperative Association

 

The Reedsville Cooperative Association was organized in 1923 for the purpose of shipping livestock and the purchasing and distribution of coal, flour and feed.  All coal and feed were sold directly from rail cars.  A review of some milestones in the cooperative history are as follows:

  • 1923  April 23, Reedsville Cooperative Association was organized

  • 1924  Lots purchased.  Coal shed and warehouse constucted.

  • 1930  Construction of elevator and warehouse addition.  First feed grinder

  • 1931  Entered bulk petroleum business.  Constructed bulk storage.  Log cabin constructed for filling station.

  • 1935  Concrete grain elevator constructed.

  • 1936  New feed warehouse and purchase of hammermill.

  • 1939  Hardware store was constructed.  Entered the funeral business.  Upstairs of hardware store used as first funeral home.

  • 1944  Purchased the Shimon Funeral Home and Furniture Store.

  • 1958  Constructed new funeral home.

  • 1967  Constructed fertilizer storage building and dry fertilizer blender and bagging unit.

  • 1968  Constructed new furniture store.

  • 1976  Constructed new service station and bulk plant.

  • 1977  Constructed new grain drying facilities.

  • 1979  Constructed new fertilizer blending plant and storage warehouse.

  • 1985  Funeral home sold to the Weitings from Brillion.

  • 1986  Added areas served with facilities in Whitelaw, Branch and Rockwood-the former Whitelaw Cooperative.

  • 1988  New agri-chemical loading facilities constructed at Reedsville and Rockwood.

  • 1989  New office addition behind existing hardware store in Reedsville

  • 1990  Construction of Reedsville Townmart and Hot Stuff Pizza.  New 3200 sq. ft. addition to the garage building and new pumps and canopy.

  • 1995  Bulk Petroleum expansion through purchase of additional route and large truck.

  • 1998  Branch Townmart was rebuilt.  New convenience store, Hot Stuff Pizza and Cheese Nook.

  • 1999  New A&W Restaurant and Food Court addition in Reedsville.  Townmart and garage was remodeled to complete this project.

  • 1999  October 26.  Reedsville feed mill disaster.  Fire destroyed the entire feed mill and some grain facilities.  Seven people, including six employees, were injured but have since returned to productive employment.

  • 2000  New 120,000 gallon bulk petroleum plant at Branch. Complete system with fast loading and unloading in new concrete dike.  Built in same location as old plant.

  • 2000  April 1.  Merged with East-Central Cooperative Association and became Country Horizons Cooperative.

 

Fun Facts from the Archives

  • 1930  Board authorized manager's salary at $100/month.

  • 1932  Board set price of gasoline at 11¢ per gallon and kerosene at 8¢.

  • 1932  Board reduced wage scale from 30¢ per hour to 20¢ for warehouse labor and 30¢  per hour for labor for coal.

  • 1932  Board authorized the secretary "to purchase a box of cigars for the directors meeting and when a customer pays his bill give him one".

  • 1935 Board authorized installation of a four-party Commonwealth Telephone line at $2 per month.

  • 1939  Board approved "getting into the funeral and burial business" and authorized purchase of a hearse for $1350 an a stretcher for $10.

  • 1940  Board authorized purchase of shirts for co-op bowling team.

  • 1954  At annual meeting members passed a resolution that the co-op take a stand against Daylight Saving Time.
